Friday @ #1 Legion = Wyrd Fest 2010, Interview w/ collaborator Paul Lawton

Friday @ #1 Legion = Wyrd Fest 2010, Interview w/ collaborator Paul Lawton

By Kait Kucy

Incredible music history will be created this Friday evening at the downtown Calgary #1 Royal Canadian Legion when Wyrd Festival smashes through all three floors of this beloved Canadiana-induced bar/bingo hall.  15 bands will hit the stage so be sure to get down there early if you want to catch all the shows.  This night will also launch the new 7″ record “Bloodstains Across Alberta”, in which myself & New Canadian Modern are partnering with Mammoth Cave Recordings for this showcase on Alberta bands.  I got in touch with my collaborator for the project and the reigning Albertan force in organzing the Wyrd Alberta Travelling Festival to talk about these projects and upcoming work.

Kait Kucy (KK) : Exactly what is Wyrd Festival?

Paul Lawton (PL): The “WYRD ALBERTA TRAVELLING FESTIVAL” is a three day, multi-city travelling music festival bringing fringe bands from all across Canada. April 30 (CALGARY :: THE LEGION), May 1 (EDMONTON :: ARTERY) and May 2 (LETHBRIDGE :: HENOTIC). Bands include Women, Nu Sensae, Shearing Pinx, Oman Ra II, JAZZ, Fist City, Myelin Sheaths, Myths, Krang, The Famines, The Wicked Awesomes, Cosmetics, my new band Radians, and my new favourite band TOPLESS MONGOS!!! So much more. Lethbridge has a lineup of 35 bands over 12 hours.
Kait Kucy (KK) : How did you get involved?
Paul Lawton (PL): May 2009, I had invited the Wicked Awesomes, in my mind one of the most entertaining bands Alberta has ever seen, to come play my Mammoth Cave Fest as one of the headliners. Lethbridge loves the shit out of The Wicked Awesomes and they sell out every show they play here. I guess they had a great time and Tyler and Levin got to talking about doing a similar thing in Edmonton, which later became Wyrd Fest. Those guys basically stole my idea and made it way better, and everyone knows that I invented the two-stage festival! Before Wyrd I, Levin had my band Myelin Sheaths and The Moby Dicks up to Edmonton to play the Wicked Awesomes LP release show at a shitty bowling alley that was put on by Aaron Levin of WeirdCanada.com, and it was the best show I have ever played in Edmonton ever – chaos, fights, cheap beer, bowling… we got invited back to play Wyrd I and came back and Wyrd took over as the best show I have ever played in Edmonton ever.

Wyrd I was everything a festival should be – good bands, sweet merch setup, and Fordist managerialism. I was extremely sick that night as I ever have been at a show, but still managed to unload $700 worth of records and have the best time.

Last December, Levin calls me up and we got talking about lining up Mammoth Cave and Wyrd Fest and making it easier to pay bands to come to Alberta with guarantees and safe-bet shows. We both drew up a short-list of bands we wanted and 100% of the bands I asked couldn’t come and 100% of the bands Levin wanted could come. We both have a pretty strong relationship with Sled Island, and we got them on board pretty easily.

Kait Kucy (KK) : How many bands are touring?
Paul Lawton (PL): There are about 15 bands touring together. There was talk at some point about Women getting a bus, but I’m not sure if that is happening or not. I hope it is happening.
Kait Kucy (KK) : What can show-goers expect this Friday at the Legion?
Paul Lawton (PL): I think Calgary is gonna see a side of the Legion that they’ve never seen before – we’re utilizing the Basement! Lots of people might look at this lineup and be confused because the bands are so obscure, but every band was heavily vetted and we really took a long time to invite the bands we are really the most excited about. I think people who come will be pleasantly surprised and I honestly believe that there is something for everyone.
Kait Kucy (KK) : Mammoth Cave Recordings is also releasing a couple new records including Bloodstains Across Alberta — a 7″ featuring 10 Albertan bands playing 10 FAST songs about Alberta.  I had the pleasure of being a sponsor of this project and I am very excited about future releases.  What was your process in selecting bands for this record and what was it like providing a theme for writing material?
Paul Lawton (PL): Evan VanReekum and I came up with a shortlist of 15 bands we liked. I wanted the Bloodstains comp to be tied in with Wyrd Alberta because we thought we could sell most of our limited run in one go. Deadline was set to give us a one-week buffer and we waited, not sure what to expect. I figured we asked 15 bands (5 from Lethbridge, Edmonton, Calgary) that we would get 5 or 6 songs actually submitted, and we actually got 10! Six of the songs were recorded by me in the Mammoth Cave studio (including the Famines and the Throwaways tracks), two were done by Ryan Saddler in the Spectra-Tone studio (Topless Mongos and Tension Slips), and Grown-ups and Outdoor Miners went at it alone. To say I am happy with the songs we got for the comp would be an understatement.
Kait Kucy (KK) : Any other new releases to speak of?
Paul Lawton (PL):Alongside the Bloodstains Across Alberta 7″ comp (our 10th release!!), we have a 7″ from The Famines (from the same session as their Bloodstains song, the band has never sounded better) and my Radians project, which started with the songs I was writing for the never-materialized Endangered Ape full-length. This summer will see 7″s from KRANG (Edmonton) and hopefully TENSION SLIPS from Calgary if I can ever get them down here to record.Later on this summer, we will see the Bloodstains Across British Columbia, the next in the Bloodstains compilations. By December 2011, we plan on having one Bloodstains compilation for each province and then the Territories, and the plan right now is to then re-issue them in a box-set or a compilation LP of the “best” stuff.  With the profits from that, we are gonna invest our money in a little artificial intelligence company out of the Silicone valley called SKYNET and make a billion dollars.

Kait Kucy (KK) : The Calgary Wyrd Fest is linked as being a Sled Island Warm Up Party — what have you got cookin’ for Sled Island this year?
Paul Lawton (PL): Aside from playing in a bunch of bands selected – Myelin Sheaths, Radians and possibly Square Waves who are on the wait list, I’m organizing something at Comrad sound for the day-time when nothing is happening and us Lethbridge vagabonds have nothing to do – looking like its gonna be a record fair/merch setup with bands and BBQ and good times.
Kait Kucy (KK) : Lastly, the question everyone is asking — are The Moby Dicks really over?
Paul Lawton (PL): Honestly, that is up in the air. Joel and I are working really hard on the Myelin Sheaths LP that is coming out on Oakland, CA’s South-Paw Records. Evan is  working really hard on the Fist City LP that is coming out this Summer on Deadbeat Records out of Cleveland. Moby Dicks got some label interest for a 7″, but nothing really. We always have a great time when we play, our tour with BA was super fun and paid well, and there is a possible tour in the works with The Ding Dongs (Mark Sultan and Bloodshot Bill…).

We can just never get it together to jam, write new songs, record and our ambitions lie elsewhere. Technically we played our last show last week at Marquee Room which was a crazy show – 10 minute set where we fucked around and played an improvisational “interpretation” of MAGIC BUS, played two other songs and then got out of there. The drive home afterwards, we felt pretty good about the fuckery and said “band on”. I mean, I already technically quit in December, but here I am so who really knows. As Joel said “Moby Dicks are like a turd that won’t flush”.

You should go: POGO TIL YOU PUKE! Wed @ COMRAD SOUND

This Wednesday stop by COMRAD SOUND at 7pm for a kickass, quote SWEET GOTH DANCE PARTY unquote!  Only $5 to support the out of town band and it is recommended that you bring your bats and eyeliner!  Four awesome bands are playing — that means $1.25 per band!  So CHEAP!  Plus, Tension Slips and The Throwaways are clearly two of my dearly favourite bands so you should go and see if you feel the same way.

Sled Island Create-a-Poster Contest!

Sled Island Music and Arts Festival 2010
For release on April 17, 2010
NEWS RELEASE

Sled Island Create-a-Poster Contest!

(CALGARY) Sled Island is reaching out to high school students and youth clubs by setting up a Create-a-Poster contest for the last month of school. The object is for high school students or club members to design a Sled Island poster that can include Sled Island performers or artists on the poster, and whatever images or ideas they have about the festival.
Posters will be printed out and put up around schools, neighborhoods, favourite coffee shop – wherever they want, within the rules, of course. Participants will be asked to take a picture of their poster hanging up and email it to drew@sledisland.com – the finalists will receive both a wristband for the Young Buds Stage and a festival pass to Sled Island.
Participants will need to make sure their photo(s) clearly show the poster, and include their name, school or club, age and a contact number in an email to be sent in to Sled Island. Photos should be web ready and friendly.
The rules –  Like we say, participants will have to play by the rules to win! They will need to get permission from the owner or manager of the businesses they approach before hanging the poster up, they should check to see what school guidelines are, and if they’re going to post it on the street, should make sure it’s on a public notice/poster board – no lampposts or private property. Sled Island is not responsible for the content of any of the posters, and will disqualify any entries deemed offensive by our staff.
Ten (10) Young Buds wristbands and (10) festival passes will be awarded to the top 10 entries as judged by the Sled Island staff, so participants be creative! Contest closes June 15, 2010. Winners will be notified by email by June 19, 2010.
Posters needs to include the following information to qualify:
- Sled Island Festival
- June 30 – July 3, 2010
- Calgary, Alberta

flavour of the week: philip tarr of MESS FOLK

flavour of the week

philip tarr of MESS FOLK

Philip Tarr is the brain behind the magic and science of MESS FOLK, a Sydney Nova Scotia based noise rock band, that just happens to be my favourite Canadian band of the moment.  Despite being based out of the middle of nowhere, Maritimes, Canada (sorry guys) Mess Folk has been doing some amazing national and international things.  A 7 inch off of Chicago’s Hozac Records, a debut tape off of Scotch Tapes based out of Ontario, and rumours of soundtracking a Hollywood indie flick, Philip Tarr aint doing so bad promoting his self-proclaimed “noise and chaos.  Check back for a giveaway & a review of their Hozac record and Scotch Tapes release!!! In the meantime, check out this yummy flavour of the week…

Kait Kucy (KK): When did you first realize you were destined to rock n roll?

Philip Tarr (PT): I don’t rock and roll. I just make noise and annoy people. I am destined for greatness!

KK: Was it always rocknroll? I would think hillbilly bop and bluegrass are the more favoured genres of music out in Sydney NS.
PT: I used to play in a grindcore band… I also liked to do noise, spoken word and improv music. One time I played a bar gig with a sand grinder and sheetmetal. I did have a rock and roll band one time called “The Abusive Step-Dads” we sung about child abuse, solvent abuse, violence and boredom. We played 5 shows and broke up. It was an awesome band to play in. The drummer Shaun was great, so was the bassist Vince. My brother did vocals and he made up awesome lyrics and we pissed everyone off. I played guitar.

KK: What is the babe situation like out in Sydney? Usually this is one of the first things I ask but I thought I would talk about music first for a change.

PT: I used to be involved in a lot of babe situations but now I have a really nice girfriend who keeps me happy… We even write music together. She’s one of my best friends.
KK: That is VERY sweet!  I guess meant more of the MALE babe situation…y’know in case any of my rocker girlfriends decide to up and leave the prairies for a fisherman.  Whatever…  Could you easily state that you are the poster boy of garage rock in your town?  Do you have a rival poster boy?

PT: When people think of me they probably think of noise and chaos more so then garage rock. I think there are a lot of rumors about me in my town. I’ve done some “crazy” things in my life but I’d say most people think I’m a “nice guy”. I just like to be creative. I don’t care about any genre of music. Besides, my face has been punched in too many times to be poster boy material.

KK: Its really customary that I ask how many times you comb your hair a week.

PT: I never comb my hair, it’s too thick. It’s like dog fur.

KK: So, tell me why on the MESS FOLK myspace page you have your location listed as the YUKON?  Trying to geographically screw with the campus radio station radios stats or what?

PT: I have no idea why I listed Mess Folk as from the Yukon but I ain’t changing it.

KK: What are your favourite current bands?  Do you try to stay Canadian like we do, or do you often fall victim to American rocknroll?

PT: I like the Stolen Minks… Alot of the stuff on Scotch Tapes… My trading buddy Embryo always sends me projects of himself. He created the best band ever “Gruesome Toilet”… check that out people. It’s the BEST. My buddy Tyler’s band “The Dunce Club”. I mostly listen to ancient bands though…

KK: If you were being tortured by Americans and part of the torture was to listen to the same record over and over, what would it be?

PT: Probably the band Opeth. Any release.

KK: Do you have plans to tour Canada anytime soon?  Us kids out WEST wanna hang out and party with you.

PT: Yes I do. I want to get a good release out and tour on it.

KK: What about new releases?   So far you’ve got your Hozac 7″ and your Scotch Tapes cassette….what should we expect next from MESS FOLK?

PT: I want to record an LP with a decent recording setup. Being broke and just using a four track is very limiting to my output. You can expect an LP as the next Mess Folk release. It’s going to be very, very different then the first four Mess Folk releases. I have new ideas in my head.

KK: What is your top played song on your iTunes?  I hope its Katy Perry or something, even Lady Gaga would be fucking awesome.  You’d definitely graduate from being Flavour of the Week to Flavour of the Month.

PT: I have an I-pod an ex gave me as a gift one time. When I go to work out at the gym, that’s the only time I use it. On my I-pod are a bunch of bands: DA SLYME (newfoundland band from the 70′s) DISCHARGE, ELECTRO HIPPIES, THE GIZMOS, NO TREND, SIMPLY SAUCER, THE LEWD, REPULSION….

KK: Besides being “Philip Tarr”, if you were an ice cream flavour what would you be?

PT: Fiberglass insolation.

Stay tuned for my review of MESS FOLK’s debut 7 inch off of Hozac Records

you should go: 3 deadly shows in one night!!! TONIGHT!

is this friday black & white design day?  the posters oddly all work together very nicely.  weird!

you should go today: ROCK FOR DOLLAR$ @ Broken City

What in the hell (tarnation) is Rocking For Dollars? You may be asking yourself. Put simply, it’s a fantastic and monumentous event that combines high stakes rock and roll with high stakes everything. Bands sign up to play; and by bands it can be the band you just started that afternoon, once everyonoe has playedeach band gets a turn to spin the wheel (come on down!), on the wheel there are prizes as well as skrilla ($$$). If none of the bands land on the skrilla it’s heldover to the next week and so on and so on, until someone wins.
This is a great opportunity to see some great music, play a show, have fun on a Sunday afternoon, blah blah blah

Rocking For Dollars is a veritable institution in the mighty city of Halifax. It’s been a focal point in building the local music scene there and is responsible for low attendance at work and school, and the related drop in productivity, for days following R4$.

True Fact: Surf Rock found on Mars!

It’s not too often I get to plug my day job on here but I just wanted to let all you sun-deprived, toe-headed, surf rock lovers that The Bigfoot Rocketship is playing a special gig in April.  On April 1st at the First Thursday Evening at Art Central, those crazy rock’n'rollers will be knocking our soxx off from 5-9pm.  They don’t play too often so when you do get to see them its a real treat.  Yum!

you should go tmrw nite: two wicked shows!

How many times is there ever two wicked wicked shows on the same Thursday night?  Good thing the Republik and Tubby Dog are both on 17th Avenue so you can zip back and forth between shows, because thats what you are gonna need to do!  The Shitfits are a fantastic Misfits cover band made up of some Calgary’s top shitty rock royalty, while the Jeremy Clarkson features Ben and Seth Leon (of the Nymphet Clan!) dueling hard and dirty garage rock.

Hop on your skateboard (or snowboard actually — its snowing hard out there today!) over to the Republik to check out Grown-Ups and Les Drague Mothers, two of my new favourite bands spearheaded by Josiah Hughes, writer and musician.  Haven’t heard Stalwart Sons yet, neither Fuck the Tundra so I am lookin’ forward to checking both of them out.

See ya’ll there!
