philip tarr of MESS FOLK

Philip Tarr is the brain behind the magic and science of MESS FOLK, a Sydney Nova Scotia based noise rock band, that just happens to be my favourite Canadian band of the moment.  Despite being based out of the middle of nowhere, Maritimes, Canada (sorry guys) Mess Folk has been doing some amazing national and international things.  A 7 inch off of Chicago’s Hozac Records, a debut tape off of Scotch Tapes based out of Ontario, and rumours of soundtracking a Hollywood indie flick, Philip Tarr aint doing so bad promoting his self-proclaimed “noise and chaos.  Check back for a giveaway & a review of their Hozac record and Scotch Tapes release!!! Kait Kucy (KK): When did you first realize you were destined to rock n roll?

Philip Tarr (PT): I don’t rock and roll. I just make noise and annoy people. I am destined for greatness!

PT: When people think of me they probably think of noise and chaos more so then garage rock. I think there are a lot of rumors about me in my town. I’ve done some “crazy” things in my life but I’d say most people think I’m a “nice guy”. I just like to be creative. I don’t care about any genre of music. Besides, my face has been punched in too many times to be poster boy material.

PT: I never comb my hair, it’s too thick. It’s like dog fur.

PT: I have no idea why I listed Mess Folk as from the Yukon but I ain’t changing it.

PT: I like the Stolen Minks… Alot of the stuff on Scotch Tapes… My trading buddy Embryo always sends me projects of himself. He created the best band ever “Gruesome Toilet”… check that out people. It’s the BEST. My buddy Tyler’s band “The Dunce Club”. I mostly listen to ancient bands though…

PT: Probably the band Opeth. Any release.

PT: Yes I do. I want to get a good release out and tour on it.

KK: What about new releases?   So far you’ve got your Hozac 7″ and your Scotch Tapes cassette….what should we expect next from MESS FOLK?

PT: I want to record an LP with a decent recording setup. Being broke and just using a four track is very limiting to my output. You can expect an LP as the next Mess Folk release. It’s going to be very, very different then the first four Mess Folk releases. I have new ideas in my head.

PT: I have an I-pod an ex gave me as a gift one time. When I go to work out at the gym, that’s the only time I use it. On my I-pod are a bunch of bands: DA SLYME (newfoundland band from the 70’s) DISCHARGE, ELECTRO HIPPIES, THE GIZMOS, NO TREND, SIMPLY SAUCER, THE LEWD, REPULSION….

What in the hell (tarnation) is Rocking For Dollars? You may be asking yourself. Put simply, it’s a fantastic and monumentous event that combines high stakes rock and roll with high stakes everything. Bands sign up to play; and by bands it can be the band you just started that afternoon, once everyonoe has playedeach band gets a turn to spin the wheel (come on down!), on the wheel there are prizes as well as skrilla ($$$). If none of the bands land on the skrilla it’s heldover to the next week and so on and so on, until someone wins.
This is a great opportunity to see some great music, play a show, have fun on a Sunday afternoon, blah blah blah

Rocking For Dollars is a veritable institution in the mighty city of Halifax. It’s been a focal point in building the local music scene there and is responsible for low attendance at work and school, and the related drop in productivity, for days following R4$.

It’s not too often I get to plug my day job on here but I just wanted to let all you sun-deprived, toe-headed, surf rock lovers that The Bigfoot Rocketship is playing a special gig in April.  On April 1st at the First Thursday Evening at Art Central, those crazy rock’n'rollers will be knocking our soxx off from 5-9pm.  They don’t play too often so when you do get to see them its a real treat.  Yum!

How many times is there ever two wicked wicked shows on the same Thursday night?  Good thing the Republik and Tubby Dog are both on 17th Avenue so you can zip back and forth between shows, because thats what you are gonna need to do!  The Shitfits are a fantastic Misfits cover band made up of some Calgary’s top shitty rock royalty, while the Jeremy Clarkson features Ben and Seth Leon (of the Nymphet Clan!) dueling hard and dirty garage rock.

Hop on your skateboard (or snowboard actually — its snowing hard out there today!) over to the Republik to check out Grown-Ups and Les Drague Mothers, two of my new favourite bands spearheaded by Josiah Hughes, writer and musician.  Haven’t heard Stalwart Sons yet, neither Fuck the Tundra so I am lookin’ forward to checking both of them out.

This week there’s $150 on the wheel as well as three hours of rehearsal time at The New Black and a custom made guitar strap!!!!

It’s finally happening!  New Canadian Modern and Mammoth Cave Recording Co. is putting on a show!   February 26th at the Palomino in downtown Calgary, Myelin Sheaths, Grown-Ups, Tension Slips, and Topless Mongos will be taking the stage in anticipation of the compilation 7″ we are putting out this spring called Bloodstains Across Alberta! I am pretty excited about this whole deal, not only working with Paul Lawton, but being a part of music history.  Since I have literally no musical talent myself it is very exciting that I get to “put out a 7″ record” and help promote some of Alberta’s top garage and punk rock acts.  Anyways, you should definitely come out to the show and check out these fantastic bands.  I will be there reprezentin’ probably at the Merch booth so come on by, grab a pin, and we can talk about our favourite junk food and shitty bands we love.
