History

Hi Pals!  Welcome to New Canadian Modern Dot Org!  My name is Kait, a writer and creative visionary from Calgary, Alberta.  From November 2006 until August 2009, I was the founder and editor of Kitschykoo! Subcultural Lifestyle Magazine.  Unfortunately, despite our best recessionista efforts, Kitschykoo! had to fold.  It was a great publication while it lasted and I am even more excited to work on this new project.

New Canadian Modern is a term I came up with last fall when trying to express to a friend how I, and my peers, fit into today’s culture.  I am not post-modern, I am new modern; I am Canadian.  The term Mod was coined in the 1960s as a way to describe the  young working class that had a strong affinity for  well-tailored clothing and a sophisticated lifestyle.  Their mantra, essentially, was to look/live as luxe as possible while earning an extremely modest income.  And I know I am not just speaking for myself when I say that this is a way of life we try to follow.

Visit New Canadian Modern for some daily cdn culture shock.  Interviews and articles about inspiring creative individuals, music, videos, artist features, exciting interiors and exteriors, and young entrepreneurs!

Feel free to send me an email if you have something cool to share or just want to say hi.  I am always on the look-out for new talent to showcase on the site; it could be you!
